This is a condensed version of our brick oven project, but hopefully it will be clear enough to give you a good idea as to how the oven was built. If you'd like to build your own oven, I highly recommend the book 'The Bread Builders'. We used the basic plans in it to design and build the oven. If you're in need of a good mason to make sure it gets fit together well, Mark Statler has experience with building brick ovens like this one. We built a base of concrete blocks and pouring a concrete hearth we built the main oven out of firebrick. The arch is held up by a plywood form until the mortar set. After the inner layer of firebrick, we clad the oven with concrete bricks and concrete. After this part, the concrete block walls went up and vermiculite was added for insulation. For the exterior, we wanted native stone, so we got stones out of the creek and Mark laid them on the facade of the oven. The finished oven with a fire inside. It has been a great experience to use this oven! | Cooking Here's Tim Smith going down the pizza line, putting on the fixins! ![]() It takes about two to three minutes to cook a pizza! ![]() ![]() Kerry likes the hot pizza! |
